A modern kayaking center at Špica in Celje is complementing the sports and recreational, tourist, excursion and catering facilities along the Savinja river. This is the Kayak canoe club NIVO Celje, which has been connecting lovers of boating (kayaking and canoeing) in wild waters for seven decades. Throughout the history of the club, a high number of excellent athletes such as Cankar sisters, Matjaž Murgelj, Dušan Konda, Pavel Kuralt, started in the club... Recently, their best member Simon Brus, winning gold medals at European championships, twice winning the Country championship and many other medals, most notably gold from the first Youth Olympic Games in Singapore in 2010. New generations of young kayakers are already germinating alongside him, bringing many medals from world and European youth championships.
The center stands next to the popular promenade along the Savinja River, where you can also find an outdoor fitness center. The not too demanding kayak track in the Savinja river can be used for recreational purposes and especially for the training of younger selections, which is also used by other Slovenian clubs. It organizes competitions within the Kayak Association of Slovenia. At the club, you can borrow basic equipment when paying your annual membership fee.
In the summer months, at the center, various entertaining performances or concerts of various bands are organized, including the traditional 1st of May celebration. In the club café and pizzeria Spica, walkers can enjoy a rest while walking along Savinja. There is a smaller hall for 50 people for various lectures, meetings, and presentations.
